The Vintage Luggage Company

Getting there was not as important as how you got there!

HERMÈS – LOUIS VUITTON - GOYARD

Look back in awe. The Ritz. The Savoy. The Orient Express. The Great Age of transatlantic voyages. The „Golden Twenties“, the early Thirties. Celebrities who were not only in the money but had the sense to spend it in style... Today, with authentic antique luggage your thoughts travel into a transfigured past.

Take, for instance, that unique vanity case dating back to 1920. It was handmade by Hèrmes for Mme Yannie-Pièrre Dupuy from the finest crocodile skin available. Needless to say that La Grand Dame – the spouse of a French newspaper billionaire who published the extremely popular „Petit Journal“ – expected nothing less than a bit of luxury. Or take that travel bureau by Louis Vuitton, manufactured for the authoress Miss Maurice Watkins who made it (1927) world famous with her stage play „Chicago“. And to drop a few more names: Coco Channel, Ernest Hemingway, the Kennedy Clan, „tout Hollywood“ – all of them just couldn’t do without Vuitton, Goyard, Moynat and Hermès.

This is the unique charm and the appeal of a grand past. With the enormous success of the movie „Out of Africa“ at the latest, vintage luggage graduated to something like cult status – to one of the „Les Must“ of posh interior furnishings. Today, antique trunks and chests adorn exclusive homes all over the world as decorative and unusual items of furniture.

Particularly sought after, of course, are pieces in very good condition which brandish original stickers from Grand Hotels, legendary train lines and famous ocean liners – triggering your phantasy, whispering stories of stylish voyages in times long gone. The nostalgic charm of such items is highly regarded by connoisseurs, collectors and investors likewise. A suitcase, a trunk, maybe even a complete travel set by Louis Vuitton, Hermès or Goyard are craftsmanship of the highest standard and evidence that its owner is in the league of the few who accept nothing but the best.

At leading auctioneers like Sotheby’s and Christies, originals in excellent condition realize top prices with regularity. This makes such items an increasingly interesting and profitable investment. Just a few years ago (and even then with some luck), good Vuitton trunks were still obtainable for the equivalent of a few thousand Deutschmarks. Today, we’re talking 10.000 Euros plus. Rare beauties, like for instance the travel secretary „malle secrétaire Stokowski“, now easily realize 50.000 Euros and more.
